Photography Tips for Visitors

Best Time of Day

Early morning (around opening time at 8 AM) and late afternoon (after 3 PM) offer the best lighting conditions. The harsh midday sun can create strong shadows and wash out the details of the structures.

Special Events

If possible, visit during the spring or autumn equinox to witness the famous serpent shadow effect on El Castillo. This occurs around March 21 and September 22 each year.

Equipment

A wide-angle lens is useful for capturing the massive structures, while a zoom lens helps with architectural details. A polarizing filter can enhance the blue sky and reduce glare from the limestone.

Avoiding Crowds

To capture photos without crowds, arrive at opening time or visit during the off-season (late April to early December, excluding holiday periods). Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends.

Best Angles

For El Castillo, the northwest corner offers a classic view. The ball court is best photographed from its northern end. Explore less-visited areas for unique perspectives away from the main tourist paths.

Weather Considerations

Partly cloudy days can provide dramatic skies and softer lighting. During the rainy season (May to October), morning visits are recommended as afternoon showers are common.
